By the feel (soft), warmth, and fit. Looks elegant and could pass (at a distance) for cashmere. I was really surprised. Bought a medium (I am between a small and a medium) and it was a little large.

I ordered my usual size L which corresponds with size 12. I should have gotten an M. I have long arms and the sleeves came well down to my fingertips. There is plenty of room through the torso, more than I prefer. But it is a well made sweater and I wore it on a cold Spring morning so it won't be returning it.
